Vijaya Ekadashi Importance

Vijaya Ekadashi holds great significance as it is believed that observing this fast can bring victory. In fact, Lord Rama himself observed this fast on the advice of sage Bakdalbhya to defeat the powerful ruler Ravana. The fasting on Ekadashi played a crucial role in Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana.

To ensure a successful Vijaya Ekadashi puja, it is important to begin preparations one day in advance. Start by purifying the designated place of worship and keeping seven grains there. On the day of fasting, take a morning bath and purify both the temple and the place of worship. Next, install a copper or clay pot over the seven grains at the place of worship. Then, place a picture of Lord Vishnu and offer incense, lamp, sandalwood, fruits, flowers, and basil. After completing the puja, recite the story of Vijaya Ekadashi. Finally, chant the name of Shri Hari at night.

Vijaya Ekadashi fasting History

The Skanda Purana, an ancient Hindu text, contains a story narrated by Lord Sri Krishna to Yudhishtira. This story was originally told to Narad Muni by Lord Brahma and is based on the epic Ramayana. During Lord Rama’s exile, the demon King Ravana abducted His wife Devi Sita. When Lord Rama and His brother Laxmana discovered Sita’s absence, Lord Rama, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, felt overwhelmed like any ordinary person. Jatayu, a vulture and devotee of the Lord, tried to save Sita but was fatally injured by Ravana. Before Jatayu passed away, he informed Lord Rama about Sita’s abduction. Later, Lord Rama met Sugriva, the King of monkeys, who offered his army of monkeys to help in the search for Sita. Lord Hanuman, a devoted follower of Lord Rama, was sent to Lanka (now Sri Lanka) to find Sita. He located her in Ashoka/Ashok Vatika garden and delivered Lord Rama’s message, presenting Sita with His ring as proof of his authenticity. Upon learning that Sita was indeed held captive in Lanka, Lord Rama decided to wage war against Ravana. Accompanied by Laxmanjee, Sugriva, and their army of monkeys, Lord Rama reached the ocean’s shores to cross over to Lanka. However, they realized that the ocean was deep and dangerous, inhabited by crocodiles, making the crossing a challenging task.

In this particular scenario, Lord Rama approached His beloved brother Laxmanji and requested his assistance in finding an easy method to achieve his goal. Following Laxmanji’s suggestion, Lord Rama decided to visit the esteemed sage Bakadalbhya, who resided on a nearby island. The sage, being all-knowing, immediately recognized Lord Rama as none other than Lord Vishnu Himself, who had taken on a human form. Curious, Bakadalbhya inquired why the Lord had approached a humble sage like himself. Lord Rama respectfully explained the challenge of crossing the ocean with his army of monkey soldiers. Upon hearing this, Bakadalbhya Muni advised Lord Rama that observing the auspicious Vijaya Ekadasi would ensure success in crossing the ocean and achieving victory over Ravana. The sage then proceeded to explain the rituals that needed to be followed for the Vijaya Ekadasi. Lord Rama attentively listened to the sage’s instructions and faithfully performed every aspect of the ritual. As a result, he gained the merit necessary to successfully cross the ocean with his army of monkeys and ultimately defeat the mighty King Ravana of Lanka, thus reuniting with his beloved wife Devi Sita.
